King Protea By The Stem
King protea are our largest flower and add an element of boldness to any Hawaiian flower arrangement. Grown high on the mountain in Maui this is truly the king of Hawaiian flowers. The stems are thick and woody so be careful when trimming. They are also rather heavy so consider a sturdy vase for display. The flower itself is 6 or more inches across and can be used to anchor a wedding bouquet. King protea petals are a soft pink and white color. The centers appear a soft silvery color.
King protea are seasonal and can be limited in availability during summer months. Please place your order at least a week in advance at all times of the year. This gives us time to make sure you receive the best possible flowers.
This is a selection of one dozen kings fresh from a farm in Maui. They can be displayed together or individually around your home. This is rather large flower. So it is typically a focal point in any arrangement.
While associated with Maui king protea are native to South Africa who’s national cricket team adopted the name for their team nickname. Like many in it’s family the king is sometimes said to have a ‘pre-historic’ appearance. Some scientists believe protea originated 80 million years ago. This makes them one of the earth’s oldest flowers. In some places proteas are called ‘sugarbush’ from their South African name.
The bloom has a velvet texture and faint fragrance. Don’t throw them away after you have displayed them. They can be dried and kept as a remembrance. Allow the flowers to dry naturally in their vase but without water. Or hang the flower upside down in a dark area for about two weeks. The shape will remain and the color will lose some of it’s brilliance. Commercial preservatives can be used on the dried king protea.
